Is that all there is to this place, cheese? You could be forgiven for thinking so, when you come across the massive cheese cellar made from concrete at the entrance to Lingenau. It is home to 33,000 maturing wheels of cheese. They are the pride of the KäseStrasse association. A bit further on towards the village centre is St Anna’s chapel. It was made from a rock which grew at the edge of the village: the calc-tuff, which has its own path. A further structure at the edge of the village is also worth a special mention: the old wooden bridge across the Subersach. It is the work of the engineer who designed the Suez Canal, Alois Negrelli.

On each walk, information columns draw attention to a building, to the special features of the cultural landscape, to artisanal or ecological details, to facets of artistic, culinary or touristic works.

Please press the button on the information column.

Some of the most remarkable calc-tufa formations north of the Alps can be found on the steep banks of the Subersach. Explore the natural spectacle on the "calc-tufa thematic walk".

  • Directions

Taking the footpath from the church square, first of all you walk past the “Gasthaus Traube”. After the “Gasthof Adler”, an asphalt path branches off to the left-hand side. Take this path uphill. At house no. 323, you turn off to the left again (sign “Privatstraße”). This path meanders its way through a lovely ensemble of houses. At the next intersection (roadsafety mirror), you keep to the left and continue to the part of the village called “Oberbuch”. At signpost 51.37, a footpath takes you down to the centre of the village. There, at the bus stop, you go to the right, past the church to the north, and go left infront of the presbytery down to the mainportal of the church. Here, you keep to the right and, on the pavement, continue straight ahead (yellow-and-white marking, short detour to the left to house “Hof Nr.6”). At the next crossroads, you turn to the left (pavement) and, after the “VitalhotelQuellengarten” you come to the mainstreet, where you keep to the pavementand walk downhill to the right. Once you have passed the “Käsekeller”, you turn off to the left at the “Grüner Baum” bus stop and take the asphalt road as far as house no. 81. Here, another path branches off to the left: take it uphill as far as the rotunda of St Anna’s chapel. Next to the chapel, to the right, an agricultural path sets off inthe direction of “Rain”. From there (board51.3), you hike back to the village centre. At the distribution substation, a short detour takes you to the house “Gschwend Nr. 425”. You then return to the village centre.
