    ... a tour of Vorarlberg’s cities.

The Rheintal valley in Vorarlberg has developed into a cohesive settlement boasting a unique urbanity that unites city and country. Here, internal borders become blurred and small-scale structures are infused with urban charm. The cities of Vorarlberg have evolved considerably in recent decades, with former industrial areas now given over to cultural, office and residential buildings. Historic local centres are also enjoying a real renaissance. This tour takes in city-defining structures as well as the vital spaces in between that bring it all together.

Vorarlberg’s first pedestrian zone was established in 1973 in Schmiedgasse road, Feldkirch. Today, almost all of Feldkirch’s Old Town is closed to traffic and the other city centres across the region have received a considerable upgrade through sweeping traffic reduction measures, the addition of congregation areas and quality planning of outdoor spaces. Revitalised urban centres boasting a variety of shopping and dining options reflect the success of these changes, as do the delightful squares, parks and promenades.

More top tips for this route:

Marktplatz square in Dornbirn city centre is surrounded by a cluster of buildings from different centuries. These include the “Rotes Haus”, which is over 400 years old, the classical church and a series of modern structures. The market held every Saturday is perfect for culinary delights and fantastic flowers, while the many townhouses and arcades in Feldkirch’s Old Town make it ideal for a stroll. This city was originally established in the late 12th century at the same time as Schattenburg castle and many of its foundation walls date back to the Middle Ages. The Old Town ensemble is now protected as a listed heritage site, with the landmark late-Gothic cathedral located in the north-east corner of this historic centre.

A number of hotels, restaurants and inns located on or in close proximity to the route are of special interest in terms of the local building culture. These establishments are ideal for mouth-watering meals and overnight stays during the “Architectours” in Vorarlberg.
