Faschina is the passage between Bregenz Forest and the Großwalsertal. The tour leads around 2107 m high Zafernhorn. On the south side you reach the Zafernmaisäß and the Bärenalpe. In the direction of the Zafernhorn the tour leads across a ridge into the Alpine area Zafernalpe. After the detour to the Zafernalpe the path leads back to the north side of the Zafernhorn reaching the Bregenz Forest and the Bartholomäusalpe. After a short way downhill the tour leads back onto the Faschinajoch and the Alpine are Tiefenwald with a small shop.

The round trip starts at the top of the pass and leads on a beautiful hiking path to the Bärenalpe and the Zafernmaisäß. We continue heading east to the Walser territory and the farmed Zafernalpe to enjoy alpine cheese, butter and drinks. The Zafernalpe is a typical pasture of the Walsertal. There are several huts (stables, dwellings) and a community Sennhaus (dairy). From here you need to walk back a bit to get back on track that now takes you to the north side of the Zafernhorn and further to the Bartholomäusalpe, a typical Bregenzer forest pasture with a community house and a rustic dairy. Wilfried Türtscher provides hikers with a hearty Brettljause (snack) and other alpine products. A broad hiking path leads from the Bartholomäusalpe back to the Faschinajoch. At the Alpe Tiefenwald you get a chance to rest and shop alpine products (different snacks, Emmental cheese, mountain cheese, butter, mountain herbs tea, schnapps and drinks).

  • Directions

From the Faschinajoch we take the circular hiking trail «Rund ums Zafernhorn» (Around the Zafernhorn). On a narrow path (marked red-and-white) we walk to the Bärenalpe and the Zafernmaisäß. Via a yellow-and-white marked trail we reach the east side of the Zafernhorn and the alpine pasture of the same name. We hike on a red-and-white marked path (E4 Cyprus-Tarifa) to the Barholomäusalpe. A narrower red-and-white marked trail takes us back to the Faschinajoch.
