Hittisau village square

Village Square Hittisau
  • Situated at the intersection of three roads and bordered by the church and inns, this village square featuring a charming fountain represents the heart of Hittisau. Its buildings tell a tale of continuity and change: while the facades of the Hirschen and Krone inns reflect the style of the mid-17th and 19th century respectively, Ritter-von-Bergmannsaal hall was erected in 1989 as the village’s first foray into contemporary architecture.

Designed by Hermann Kaufmann and Christian Lenz, this timber structure is a unique addition that establishes a compelling connection to the existing buildings surrounding it.

The Krone Hotel underwent a phased conversion starting in 2007, with Bernardo Bader and the team from Werkraum Bregenzerwald making the adjustments needed to meet the expectations of modern hotel guests. This project wonderfully demonstrates just what traditional buildings are capable of becoming. For example, while the old and new parlour are based on similar architectural elements and share a flair for hospitality, they clearly embody the spirit of different epochs.

This fascinating combination is also a key feature of the Haus Nenning building located opposite. Designed by Andreas Cukrowicz and completed in 2004, the three-storey timber structure references the formal characteristics of the older nearby townhouses as the expression of a “new tradition”.
