Factbox

Place: 6845 Hohenems
  • The departure of a large textile manufacturer shortly after the turn of the millennium enabled the market town of Götzis to craft a large central complex from the ground up as an attractive shopping, residential and commercial facility. Starting in 2004, a series of construction competitions and projects were organised as part of this new “Am Garnmarkt” development.

Am Garnmarkt 4 marks the starting point in the south of the pedestrian area: the large existing building located directly opposite forms a portal of sorts that is further accentuated by the tower-like design, vertical facade arrangement and colour scheme of this new structure. Here, the ground floor is given over to retail while the upper floors focus on services. The largely unsupported construction of this commercial property ensures the flexibility needed to fulfil a wide range of uses.

Am Garnmarkt 6 and 8 were erected at the same time, containing residential, office and service facilities as well as a crèche and assisted living units. Both buildings feature a composite construction including solid support and ceiling structures that use the core of the stairway as reinforcement, non-bearing timber elements as external walls, and a facade made of black-coated rough-sawn spruce with bright eternit strips in between. The kinks in the structure follow the stipulations of the master plan.

Am Garnmarkt 10 and 20 were also completed in 2011, with one property dedicated to owner-occupied units and the other focused on charitable housing. The polygonal arrangement of both structures enables unconventional layouts with secluded terraces and appealing outdoor areas. Each building is also characterised by open floor plans and a spacious atrium.
