    LECH AM ARLBERG IS A TYPICAL WALSER SETTLEMENT. ORIGINATING FROM THE WALLIS IN WESTERN SWITZERLAND; THE WALSER SETTLED HERE IN THE 14TH CENTURY.

    THE WALSER PEOPLEOriginating from the canton of Wallis in western Switzerland, the Walser started to settle in Vorarlberg in the 13th century. They were ordered to come by the ruling landlords, as they were experienced farmers. Their task was to reclaim and cultivate high-alpine terrains, including the area around Lech. To this very day, the vestiges of the Walser people can be traced in the local vernacular. In the Tannberg area, a small museum near Schröcken and buildings are a reminder of the life and work of the Walser people. The tour takes hikers to the former Walser settlement of Bürstegg and to the “Wang-Hus“, one of the oldest houses in the Tannberg area. Its centre dates from the late 15th or early 16th centuries. The “Huber-Hus” in Lech, which was built in 1590 and is used as a museum today, is also worth a visit.

    Take the Lech hiking bus from the Lech post office to Oberlech and the terminal at “Schlössle”. Walk up the paved road on the right to Tannberg lookout. From here, pick up the forest trail downhill on the right to a barbecue site at the far end of the ravine. Cross the wooden bridge to the other side and continue up to Gaisbühelalpe. Crossing colourful alpine pastures and extensive chive fields, the trail meanders gently uphill and downhill to Auenfeldsattel. Turn right and follow the hiking trail, first uphill and then downhill until you reach an alp trail shortly before Bürstegg. Keep left for Bürstegg. Pause for a rest and soak up the scenery at this old Walser settlement. Weather permitting, there is a rewarding descent via the Wang-Hus. After Bürstegg, pick up the meadow trail, which soon turns into a narrow footpath that runs steeply downhill through the forest to Wang-Hus and ends at the bus stop. Should it rain, you are advised to descend from Bürstegg via the alp trail which also leads to a bus stop. Return on the hiking bus.
