What is Friedrich Schiller doing in the Raetikon? No, he is not rhyming dramatic verse, but lending the craggy rock his noble writer’s profile. Alps and meadows line the ascent to Mondspitze peak – the name ‘lunar peak‘ being suggestive of a sickle-shaped ridge overlooking the alpine town of Bludenz from where five valleys unfold: Klostertal, Montafon, Brandnertal, Walgau and Grosses Walsertal. Wonders of nature all along the way: gypsum dolines, red ant hills made from pine needles, a surprisingly large number of bird species. Vorarlberg’s largest gypsum doline measures 200m in diameter and 100m in depth. In earlier times, Schillerkopf was called Kessikopf, derived from the German “Schöpfkelle“ – or ladle – which the doline resembles. Viewed from the gable cross at Schillerkopf, standing on the very tip of the nose, the colourful mountain and valley scenery is simply jaw-dropping. What is more, we are facing the invisible geological border between Africa and Europe in the Blumenegg region, where the two continental plates meet. Before the rise of the Alps (in a distant past), the rocks beneath our hiking boots rested as sediments somewhere around Florence.
