  • Directions

From the main signpost at Schruns railway station, walk 100m on the road towards Bartholomäberg and cross the bridge over the Litz. From there you stroll along the Litz promenade along the brook looking towards the Zimba peak. At the railway station in Tschagguns there is a possibility for a detour to the neighbouring village. If you visit the local St. Mary’s pilgrimage church (constructed in the 15th century, extensions from the 18-19th centuries), our tour could become a three-church pilgrimage trail.
Where the Litz joins the main river, continue on the Ill trail on the woodland shores some 20min, leaving the valley behind you. At the Kaltenbrunnen-Gantschier railway stop, turn right onto a village road which offers a shortcut through the settlement of Kaltenbrunnen to the main road at the foot of the mountain range. From there, a groomed winter hiking trail runs uphill through the mountain forest. En route, you will encounter massive boulders – the remnants of an earlier rockslide. At Gaueser Wald you reach the lookout of Landschrofen and some minutes later the monastery of Gauenstein. This Capuchin monastery was founded in the 18th century by hermits who also built the church from 1847-51.
At the stations of the cross below the monastery, the route branches off to Broxweg. Here, you mount for a short while until you reach the hamlet of Brox, then stroll leisurely on the almost flat trail through idyllic mountain scenery to the edge of the forest below Montjola and on the Montjola road downhill to the beginning of Schruns. The route then passes the Litz chapel, which was erected in 1688. This chapel, together with the Gauenstein monastery church, is a site of pilgrimage in the Montafon. Having crossed the Litz bridge, you return to the point of departure.
