THE HIGH MOORHalfway along the barefoot trail you reach a typical high moor. It is a habitat of rare fauna and flora that are threatened with extinction and also impacts the region’s water supply. Water in the moor areas comes exclusively from precipitation, as they are above the groundwater table due to peat formation. The moors absorb precipitation like a sponge and release it only gradually to the surrounding rivers and lakes. They also filter that water, thus contributing significantly to preserving fragile eco-systems. High moors are home to highly-resistant plants. To protect this plant cover, high moors, unlike low-lying moors, are not used for agriculture. Their pristine beauty makes them wonderful sites for recreation.

Directions
On the Dorfbahn cable car you reach the starting point within a couple of minutes. From the mountain terminal, you hike up in the direction of Parpfienz-Alpe. Shortly after the cattle fence, a sign directs hikers to the barefoot trail. 150 m after this turn-off you will find benches beside a brook where you can take off your boots. On the first section of the trail, your feet can sense different surfaces: the brook, the sandy trail next to a perambulator lane, forest soil, sections of tree trunks, fir cones, logs and a lot more. In between the stations, there are benches and places to rest. The welcoming Parpfienz Alpe is a great place for a rustic snack. The second section of the trail runs from the alp down to the valley, passing a small lake before turning right. After a couple of minutes you will see some steps leading into the brook. As you tread on the bedrock, your feet will be massaged, sucked in, and then released and rinsed. From the brook, you can step onto the wetlands of the adjacent high moor. Return to the valley on the nearby cable-car.
