Discover 200-million-years-old evidence of the maritime past of the Alps on Steinernes Meer, a craggy karst plateau.

The journey to the Alpe Formarin bus stop is possible during the summer months with the “Formarinsee” hiking bus from Lech am Arlberg. From the bus stop at Alpe Formarin, the tour starts in a south-easterly direction following the signs to the Steinernen Meer. At the Steinernen Meer, an alpine karst plateau, you can, with a little luck, admire 200-million-year-old evidence of the maritime past. If you look closely, you will find traces of fossilised corals, shells and even ammonites. At the Steinernes Meer, the hiking trail below the Formaletsch leads westwards to the Freiburger Hütte. A stop for refreshments is worthwhile! From the Freiburger Hütte, the trail then leads along a gravel road around Lake Formarin and back to the starting point, the Alpe Formarin bus stop.

Tip: Enduring hikers with surefootedness can additionally climb the summit of the Formaletsch.

Special features: Discover fossils dating from as far back as 200 million years. Take a good look, even pick them up, but make sure not to damage any of these objects - they would be destroyed forever.
