St. Gerold municipal centre

St Gerold Civic Centre
  • The municipality of St. Gerold runs along the main road loading into the Walsertal valley. While its location on a steep slope long prevented it from having a real village centre, the fire station, the school house (a listed heritage site) and a newly added building now combine to form a gateway to the heart of St. Gerold for the first time. Although the new structure only appears to feature two storeys when viewed from the road, the terrain falls away so steeply to the south that there are in fact a further two well-lit floors underneath facing the garden. The top floor contains the municipal office, with a village shop and a small hall situated on the ground floor. The bottom two floors are given over to the kindergarten. This facility also boasts a remarkable material and energy concept: the municipal office is the first four-storey timber building in Vorarlberg, and the timber for both the construction and the fittings is sourced from the municipality’s very own forest. The building was honoured with the Austrian State Prize for Architecture and Sustainability in 2010.
