Factbox

  • The road from Riezlern to Walserschanze, to the state border and further to the parking lot Söllereck was created in 1572 as a simple walk through thick scrub and dangerous ravine. This mule track was not expanded until 1739 to a driveway. The trail over the so-called Westegger Alps is considered to be extremely steeped in history. Even before the immigration of the Walser, he was probably already used as a cattle drive to the Alps on Körb (on Hochtannbergpass) and Bärgunt. After the Alpe Innerwestegg follows the Mittelalpe, formerly called “Mittel Westegg”, after a short time then the Amansalpe. Here once stood an inn where carters, porters and pedestrians met. Between Amansalpe and Schrattenwangalpe lies the marked state border. Here between 1632 and 1647 down to the Walserschanz for protection against the warlike Sweden large Wasenmauern and earthen walls were built. Such simple protective walls were called “Schanzen”, hence the name “Walserschanz”.
