House at Klostergasse 1
-
The House at Klostergasse 1 is a typical Dornbirn farmhouse dating from the beginning of the 18th century. The name “Klostergasse” (Kloster = monastery) indicates that a small monastery-like senior citizens’ home was founded here in 1770. Such houses were built as log constructions, with masonry cellars, which were mostly used as a weaving rooms or workshops. This area of the town is called the “Schmalzwinkel” (“Lard District”), since most of its former residents were rich farmers who could afford to use lard for their cooking.
