Alamannen Museum Mäder

  • The Alamannen Museum Village in the town of Mäder is devoted to the history and culture of the Alemanni, a confederation of Germanic tribes which migrated into Vorarlberg at the latest towards the end of the second half of the 6th century A.D. They were to decisively influence and shape the language, customs and way of life of this region. Several years ago the Community of Mäder provided the Society for the Preservation of Alemannic Customs and Cultural Heritage with a piece of land in the town, where a traditional Alemannic farmyard with several buildings was reconstructed. These buildings and their open-air grounds are the scene of frequent events and educational activities.

In cooperation with the “Alemannic School”, programs are offered to schools, groups of young people and adults, emphasizing both museum education and natural history topics. Life back in the times of the Alemannic migrations was firmly anchored in the natural surroundings, which is clearly evident in the popular crafts and traditions. Visitors are encouraged to explore various handicraft skills, interact with plants and animals, and develop new insights into the world of ancient mythology, ensuring a novel and interesting understanding of their Vorarlberg homeland.
