Special Anniversaries

Date: 26 May 2023

Anniversaries should be celebrated & that’s what we do! In the summer of 2023, there are numerous particularly noteworthy anniversaries in the holiday region of Vorarlberg. You can find a download below.

40 Years Lake Constance Cycling Trail
What started in 1983, has 40 years later become one of Europe’s most popular cycling trails. Some 260 km long, most of the cycling trail hugs the lakeshore, 30 km in Austria and the rest in Germany and Switzerland. If you want to take a shortcut or cycle only parts of the trail, you can always hop onto a boat of the Lake Constance fleet. www.bodensee.eu

30 Years poolbar Festival in Feldkirch
poolbar, the festival of pop culture at Altes Hallenbad in Feldkirch, will be celebrating its 30th anni¬ver-sary from 6 July to 14 August 2023. With a keen sense for trends and contemporary issues, the festival has established itself permanently in Vorarlberg’s cultural scene. The programme is an invigo¬rating mix of music and culture from niche to pop. The festival venues present themselves differently every year. In the “Poolbar-Generator”, the laboratory for festival design, students and designers create new design concepts. www.poolbar.at

60 Years Feldkirch Game Reserve
The game park on Ardetzenberg in Feldkirch has been in existence since 1963. It was initiated by Karl Lampert, a merchant from Feldkirch and at that time the district’s chief hunting official. He wanted to create a place where children and adults could experience native wild animals close up. To this day, the beautifully situated wildlife park with a playground and barbecue area in the forest are greatly popular with visitors of all ages. There are around 170 animals to marvel at on the extensive grounds, which are freely accessible all year round. The park’s inhabitants include ibex, red deer, fallow deer, raccoons, wild cats, wild boars, marmots and several other wild animals. www.wildpark-feldkirch.at

20 Years Juppenwerkstatt Riefensberg
Since 2021, the making and wearing of the traditional Bregenzerwald women’s costume, the Juppe, has been a part of Austria’s intangible cultural heritage. For 20 years now, those interested have been able to learn how the elegant traditional costume of the Bregenzerwald women is made in the atelier Juppenwerkstatt Riefensberg. In a special process, the black dress, made of shiny linen, is pleated in up to 500 folds. The decorative parts are made by embroiderers, weavers, sleeve sewers, hatters and goldsmiths. The building – an old farmhouse with a glass front extending over three floors – is also of architectural interest. The Juppenwerkstatt will be celebrating its anniversary with a traditional costume day on 10 September 2023. www.juppenwerkstatt.at

25 Years KäseStrasse Bregenzerwald
The KäseStrasse Bregenzerwald Cheese Route was founded in 1998 as an association to promote Bregenzerwald cheese culture. The members – alpine dairies, cheese innkeepers, farms with farm-gate sales – invite in¬terested parties to tastings and let them into the secrets of cheese production. Many Bregenzerwald inns are members of KäseStrasse and are therefore designated “cheese inns” with a themed menu. The folkloric highlight of the KäseStrasse Bregenzerwald calendar of events is when cattle are driven down from the high alps to the valley in autumn, a tradition which is celebrated in several villages. The biggest event with a market and cheese awards will take place on 16 September 2023 in Schwarzen¬berg. www.kaesestrasse.at/en

10 Years Werkraum Haus in Andelsbuch
It was a high-key event in Bregenzerwald when the Werkraum Haus Building opened in Andelsbuch in 2013, with everybody being more than pleased when the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor could be won over to design the building. Zumthor had gotten to know and appreciate some Bregenzerwald craftsmen in the 1990s during the construction of Kunsthaus Bregenz. In 1999, a group of innovative craftsmen founded Werkraum Bregenzerwald. Soon the idea was born to build a house of their own. Today, Werkraum Bregenzerwald brings together some 100 craftspeople under one roof. The Werkraum Haus in Andelsbuch wants to be a showcase of craftsmanship and design, and presents changing exhibitions throughout the year.

In the anniversary year, architectural models of the great designer are on show at the exhibition on “Peter Zumthor” from 18 March to 16 September 2023. The exhibition has been put together in cooperation with the Vorarlberg Architekturinstitut vai, Juppenwerkstatt Riefensberg and the Baroque Builder Master Museum Au. From spring onwards, further models from Peter Zumthor’s studio will be on display at these locations to put things in a wider context. www.werkraum.at/en

25th Silvretta Classic Rally Montafon
Vintage car drivers and spectators have been meeting for the Silvretta Classic Rally Montafon for 25 years. Starting from Schruns, some 180 drivers negotiate several Alpine passes. The highlight is the drive on the Silvretta High Alpine Road to Bielerhöhe heights at an altitude of 2,000 metres. The road winds its way up the mountain in 34 hairpin bends. The anniversary rally will take place from 6 to 8 July 2023, and also offers an enjoyable social programme. www.montafon.at

20th Montafon Arlberg Marathon
On 24 June 2023, the Montafon Arlberg Marathon will be hosted for the 20th time, with a choice of three routes: the 17-km Panorama Trail, the 33-km T33 Trail and the marathon distance. There are also 3 trail routes for children. All trails run through the European protected area Verwall in the border region between Tirol and Vorarlberg. Runners appreciate the scenic beauty and the varied terrain with forest and alpine trails in the serenity of the mountains. www.montafon.at

10th edition of the Walserherbst in Grosses Walsertal
Since 2004, the Walserherbst has been taking place every two years in the Grosses Walsertal Biosphere Park. With a combination of tradition and contemporary art and culture, the festival turns the entire valley into a stage for three weeks. The tenth edition of the Walserherbst will take place from 17 August to 10 September 2023 and promises a genre mix of music and theatre, performance and land art, photography and culinary delights. The anniversary edition will be opened by a cowbell performance by Swiss jazz and improvisation musician Julian Sartorius. walserherbst.at

15 Years Mountaineering Villages Grosses Walsertal
The mountaineering villages were launched at the initiative of the Austrian Alpine Club. Their goal is to support sustainable development in the Alpine region. Since 2008, the Grosses Walsertal biosphere reserve is a member of this association. To commemorate its 15th anniversary, an anniversary hike to the Wangspitze with a mass on the mountain top has been planned for 22 July 2023. bergsteigerdoerfer.org

250 Years Village of Bürserberg
Counting some 500 inhabitants, the village of Bürserberg is located on the way from Alpenstadt Bludenz up to Brandnertal valley. In 2023, the village will be commemorating its 250th anniversary. Anniversary events include an exhibition on show at the Paarhof Buacher Museum, which is to open on 30 June. The day of 30 June will also see a presentation of the Bürserberg Heimatbuch, which portrays the history and present of the village and its associations. A new themed culture trail, complete with information boards, takes hikers to historically relevant sites and buildings.
