A trip to the Bregenzerwald

Poetic landscapes and picturesque villages

Our journey of discovery leads us through the gently sloping hills of the Lower Bregenzerwald to Andelsbuch before taking us back either to Bregenz or to Dornbirn in the Rheintal valley via Bödele. The villages of this region present themselves with a surprising combination of old and new (wooden) architecture. During the leisurely ‘Umgang Bregenzerwald’ village walks, we will catch glimpses of the locals’ creative spirit.

  • This day trip starts and finishes in either Bregenz or Dornbirn.
  • It combines the following Landbus routes from Bregenz: 25 (Bregenz – Langen – Krumbach – Hittisau – Egg), 35 (Bregenz – Alberschwende – Egg – Schwarzenberg – Bezau), 37 (Egg – Andelsbuch – Bezau – Schoppernau, Mo – Fr), 40 (Dornbirn – Egg – Andelsbuch – Bezau – Schoppernau), 38 (Bersbuch – Schwarzenberg – Bödele – Dornbirn) with trains (suburban rail or REX) from Dornbirn to Bregenz. The daily buses run every hour until around 10 pm; the train between Dornbirn and Bregenz runs every 20 minutes. This gives you plenty of time for discovery in the places recommended here. All departure times listed here (2022 schedules) are suggestions. They are valid every day from Monday to Friday. On weekends, departure times may change slightly.
  • The cleVVVer mobil app for Android and iPhone, offered by the Verkehrsverbund Vorarlberg (Vorarlberg Transport Association), is the perfect companion for your trip. See the end of this page for information on downloading it.
  • All recommended excursions and walks begin very close to the bus stops mentioned. There are ‘Umgang Bregenzerwald’ village walks at the various stages of this trip, i.e., Krumbach, Hittisau, Lingenau, Andelsbuch or Schwarzenberg. These signposted routes give you an insight into the local way of life. Each walk takes between 1.5 and 2.5 hours. We recommend sturdy footwear for the village walks, as some of them will take you off the tarmacked roads. You can spend more or less time in each village, depending on your own preferences.
  • Cost: you require a Vorarlberg day ticket for the hop-on-hop-off trip to the Bregenzerwald. This ticket costs €15.70 (children under 6 ride for free, children between 6 and 14 pay half, tariffs valid as of 2022).

      Description

The craftsmanship and tradition of the Bregenzerwald region have clearly left an impression on Smiljan Radic, as shown by his design that relocates the cosy intimacy of a parlour to the exposed setting of a bus stop. In transporting this miniature parlour to the great outdoors, he presents a familiar interior in a radical new context. His intricately detailed glass pavilion features a cassette ceiling made from black concrete and…

      Description

As a self-described research institute for architecture, Ensamble Studio’s projects push materials to the limits of their performance. Fascinated by the elemental quality of raw, untreated oak panels and their layering in the dry stores at timber workshops across the Bregenzerwald region, the collective took this as the basis for the spatial design of their BUS:STOP. Through the layering and arrangement of the raw panels, they succeeded in creating a…

Commissioned to design a bus shelter, he responded with a structure that lacks a roof and a bench but still provides cover and a place to sit. However, these remarkable features only reveal themselves to those who recognise…

      Description

A fire in autumn 1755 destroyed almost the entire village centre of Schwarzenberg, including the church. Rebuilt with an enthralling and harmonious blend of buildings, roads and squares, the village is now considered among the most beautiful in the Bregenzerwald region and indeed all of Vorarlberg. The ensemble including the Baroque church (featuring works by Angelika Kauffmann), the dance hall and 16 further buildings has been a listed heritage site…
