Mountaineering and High Alpine Tours

There’s something particularly alluring about high altitude touring on the glaciated Alpine mountains. However, you need a good deal of mountaineering experience and knowledge to be able to move safely across the snow and ice. The Vorarlberg mountain guides will be happy to accompany you and keep you safe.

At 3312m, Piz Buin is the highest mountain in Vorarlberg, amid the imposing Silvretta Alps. The high altitude tour lasts 4 hours, starting at the Wiesbadenerhütte hut and leading across the glacier, with easy climbing passages, to the summit. The descent leads through the Ochsental glacier icefall and back to the hut. Bergschule Kleinwalsertal and  Bergaufbergab mountaineering schools, Firmalpin mountaineering school,  Bergführer Montafon alpine school and Bergführer Vorarlberg offer regular tours up to the well-known peak.

Bergaufbergab mountaineering school also offers the opportunity to experience sunrise on Piz Buin. Don your headlamps and set out from the Wiesbadenerhütte hut between 2 and 3 a.m., depending on the time of sunrise. Mountaineers can look forward to a fantastic sunrise on the highest peak in Vorarlberg.

The Dreiländerspitze (3.197m) owes ist name to its geographical location at the border with the federal states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg and neighboring Switzerland. The summit is an extraordinary place in the middle of the Silvretta massif!

For high altitude touring novices, Bergführer Montafon mountaineering school offers a three day basic course on moving safely in the ice and snow. Tour planning, various safety techniques in the snow and ice, using crampons correctly, knot tying and handling the ice pick are just some of the points covered by the comprehensive training programme.

“The mountains that need to be moved are in our mind."

Reinhold Messner

As an introduction to high altitude touring, the Kleinwalsertal mountaineering school offers a six day crossing from Kleinwalsertal to the Silvretta Alps. The tour is very varied and includes quiet valleys, gentle mountain pastures and prominent rocky peaks, as well as providing initial experience with glaciers during the tour on Piz Buin, using crampons, climbing harness and rope.

An interesting high altitude tour in Montafon is the Silvrettahorn (3244m) with Schneeglocke (3223m) crossing. The crossing of the two peaks neighbouring Piz Buin is an impressive, scenic tour comprising ridges and glaciers. Booking 14 days before the start of the tour. Tours will go ahead whatever the weather, providing it is safe.
