Even on the drive from Au to Schoppernau, the bright, even slopes of the Hochalpe to the south, above the town, catch the eye. The Toblermann is one of the region’s best-known ski touring destinations and offers beautiful northeast-facing slopes that are relatively easy to traverse if the tracks are laid out carefully.

From the power plant, follow the forest trail and ascend a short section of wooded slope to reach the first open slopes. The route then leads through beautiful, open terrain across the Gräsalpe into flatter areas. Passing a hunting cabin, continue straight ahead in a westerly direction to the next rise in the terrain.

The subsequent slopes are traversed diagonally upward toward the west. As you do so, you’ll be moving close to a ridge that drops steeply down toward Schoppernau. Below the Hochalpe, you’ll reach a distinct flat area. From there, the route curves left and ascends to the broad ridge. You then climb this ridge—which becomes increasingly steep—to the secondary summit of the Hochalpe.

Most ski tourers end their ascent at this point. Those wishing to continue on to the Toblermann should follow the distinct south ridge. The final ascent leads somewhat more steeply eastward—as close to the ridge as possible—up to the summit of the Toblermann.
