Embark on one of the most beautiful ski mountaineering routes in the 3,000-meter Silvretta-Bielerhöhe mountain range!

This is a ski tour that excites every ski mountaineer with the long descent over extensive slopes with ideal gradients. You will be rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view and it is definitely one of the most beautiful high-altitude tours in the Silvretta.

The gentle start allows the ski mountaineer to gradually get used to the altitude and exertion of the ascent.

The professionals among the Montafon mountain guides recommend a solid basic training, avalanche, and risk management. We recommend you do guided ski tours with our Montafon mountain guides. The program for the tours can be found at www.montafon.at/skitouren

  • Directions

From the Piz Buin mountain inn, continue along the dam and the west shore towards Klostertal (even when groomed by a piste machine, this path is in open alpine terrain and is not secured against alpine hazards – NO AVALANCHE PROTECTION). The route to Klostertal goes up left of the distinctive Klostertal stream, and after about 2.5 km of mostly gentle ascent, you reach the area of the Klostertaler hut (2,366 m). The hut is public, not staffed (winter room). About 1 km south of the hut, under good conditions, you can climb directly east up the steep slope through a cirque or to the left of it. Usually, you continue a bit further south and then ascend east in a large curve over gentle slopes at a comfortable gradient. The Klostertaler glacier has many crevasses, and good forward planning for route choice is very important. When snow cover is low, it is recommended to travel roped. This way, you reach a wind hollow with a small lake south below the summit. From there, the very steep summit slope must be assessed according to the situation. Due to glacier retreat, this has become significantly steeper and should only be attempted under very good conditions. The following summit ridge is heavily corniced. The ski stash is located shortly below the summit.

Descent: same as ascent – however, note that the glacier may have crevasses. A good choice of descent line is important. You keep more to the right on the slope during the descent to make good use of it.
