Au, a village in the flood plains next to the sometimes wild waters of the Bregenzerach, produced remarkable artists in the form of its baroque masterbuilders. Their sacred buildings in the region between Lake Constance and Alsace are still greatly admired these days. The village itself is made up of several parts which, once upon a time, self-confidently faced one another. The people here created a landscape typical of the Hinterwald. It goes back to the rural three-level farming system comprising valley, mountain pasture and alp. Utility spaces, shingles and lace curtains form a further important trio of design elements – in this case, outside of, on and in the Bregenzerwald farmhouses.
On each walk, information columns draw attention to a building, to the special features of the cultural landscape, to artisanal or ecological details, to facets of artistic, culinary or touristic works.

Directions
Next to the parish church, you cross the Bregenzerach and take a few steps to the “Hotel Adler”. Then you walk along thestreet (there is a footpath) and to the right towards “Argenzipfel”. At house no. 74, you turn off to the left and take a path which leads you to the open field. Once you reach the bench, you turn off to the left onto a gravel path, and continue to walk downhill (keep to the left at the animal barn). At the bottom, when you reach the B road,you turn off to the right and continue straight ahead along the street through the “Argenau” plot of land. At house no.373, you keep to the left towards “Freibad,Sportplatz”. Once you reach the open-air swimming pool and sports field, you continue to follow the Bregenzerach. Take the next bridge to “Rehmen”. Beforehand, however, a short detour takes you to the house “Lugen Nr. 5”, which is worth seeing. Opposite house no. 102 (Muxel timber structure) in Rehmen, turn off to the right towards “Lebernau”. There, continue to the “Natur-Erlebnis Holdamoos” (yellow and white marking) and continue along an agricultural path to “Holand”. There, a foot path branches off and takes you down to the Hotel am Holand, after which you return to Rehmen via an asphalt road. At signpost 4.25, a cul-de-sac takes you tothe house “Mühle Nr. 211”. Once you have returned from this detour, keep to the right next to the church and then walk straight ahead through the “Schrecken” plot of land towards the village centre. Before you reachthe protection gallery, a bridge crosses the Bregenzerach. You now walk upriver on this cycle-cum-footpath. After the underpass, you cross the Argenbach and the Bregenzerach, and return to Au parish church.
