A small but fine circular route in Gantschier over the Gauenstein Monastery. Equipped with a viewpoint, it is an extremely family-friendly route in Montafon.

The Gantschier circular route, which mostly leads through the forest, is well suited for families. The walking time is approximately 1.5 hours, with an altitude difference of 231m to be overcome. At the Landschrofen-Känzili viewpoint, children can linger wonderfully while you enjoy the view or simply watch the children playing. Another highlight is the Gauenstein Monastery, which is a small monastery with a slightly elevated hillside location. Here you get a beautiful view of Schruns-Tschagguns. The JUFA Montafon is perfect for a refreshment stop at the end.

    Gauenstein Monastery

The Gauenstein Monastery is one of the most beautiful Capuchin establishments in Vorarlberg. Since the beginning of the 18th century, there was a hermitage here with one or two forest brothers. The little church was consecrated on July 25, 1721 by the Prince-Bishop of Chur to honor the Mother of Sorrows Mary.

At Landschrofen-Känzili a short break is worthwhile to enjoy the view over Gantschier.

  • Directions

You start at the church in Gantschier, cross the street at the traffic light, walk a short piece along the sidewalk to the left and then immediately turn right into Schrofenweg. In front of the last house on Schrofenweg, the walking/hiking trail begins to the left and goes uphill along the ravine. First, you hike through a small piece of forest towards Obergantschier. Slightly above, you pass a single house and follow the gravel road (street) up to the third hairpin bend. There you turn right onto the hiking trail to the Gauenstein Monastery. A narrow path leads you through the forest downhill, with slight ups and downs. On the way to the Gauenstein Monastery you can branch off to the Landschrofen-Känzili viewpoint. A shortcut starts on the right at the wooden bend. From the Landschrofen-Känzili viewpoint you can look towards Schruns-Tschagguns and Vandans or rest a little on the curved bench and enjoy the silence. Meanwhile, the children can linger or let off steam in the forest. From the Landschrofen-Känzili viewpoint to the Gauenstein Monastery it is about 10 minutes further through the forest. For this, keep right. Shortly before the monastery you partly go on a gravel road. The Gauenstein Monastery is a small monastery with a slightly elevated hillside location with a beautiful view of Schruns-Tschagguns. From the Gauenstein Monastery, walk back towards the Landschrofen-Känzili viewpoint and then turn left onto the Gaueser forest path towards Gantschier/Kaltenbrunnen. The path leads gently downhill through the forest. When you reach the main road, turn right and walk a few meters on the sidewalk towards Gantschier church. After a few meters, you pass the JUFA Montafon. If you are thirsty or hungry, you can refresh yourself at the bistro of JUFA Montafon. Meanwhile, children can linger on the playground in front of the house or let off steam in the great indoor area. Afterwards, it is about 10 more minutes on the sidewalk back to Gantschier church where the round closes again.
