ALPE NIEDERE MOUNTAIN CHAPEL, ANDELSBUCHSome years ago, the family who warden Alpe Niedere and the tiny wayside inn had the chapel re-built. They had promised to build this chapel if their second child was born healthy. However, their daughter was 20 by the time they got around to keeping their vow. The design by the Vorarlberg architects Cukrowicz Nachbauer was the winner of an architectural competition. Happily, the architects landed not only the job but also a special prize: three loaves of cheese from the farmers’ own alpine dairy farm. Made from local timber, the simple construction blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape. From a light gap made of glass, you can make out the time of the day and the season from inside the chapel. Its only adornment is a blue glass crucifix recessed into the altar piece. In 2009, the chapel won the builder’s award of the Austrian central association of architects, in 2011 the Vorarlberg timber construction award.

The new Bezau cable car goes up to the Baumgarten mountain terminal at 1640 m. From the terrace of the panorama restaurant you can enjoy fantastic 360 degree views of the Vorarlberg mountain scenery, the Swiss Alps and even as far as Lake Constance. A hard-surfaced trail leads first to Niedere Höhe, then on to Vordere Niederalpe and Niedere mountain inn. The detour to the simple wooden mountain chapel at Alpe Niedere is rewarding. Paragliders taking off from Niedere and Vordere Niedere towards Bezau and Andelsbuch offer a spectacular sight. A leisurely trail runs back to the Baumgarten mountain terminal.
