Get moving - Explore Vorarlberg by bike
Date: 19. February 2026
Leisurely or ambitious, culinary or historically inspired, with a view of the mountains or Lake Constance: cycling in Vorarlberg has many facets. As the spring mood sets in, so does the desire to explore the region by bike – either under your own steam or electrically assisted. We present routes for stimulating spring rides in the various holiday regions of the state.
Cycling is very important in Vorarlberg. Every Vorarlberg resident cycles around 640 kilometers a year, a top figure compared to other federal states. E-bikers even cover around 950 kilometers. One reason for these impressive figures is the well-developed cycling route network. People who cycle to work or school appreciate the parking spaces at train stations and the option of taking their bike with them on local trains. There is also a large selection of routes for those who prefer mountain bikes or gravel bikes.
Cycling options
Cycling has become even more diverse in recent years. In addition to racing bikes, road bikes, trekking bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes, gravel bikes have recently become very popular. Routes are constantly being optimized, and new ones are being added. In total, there are over 520 varied kilometers of cycling to experience in Vorarlberg. There is also a network of around 1,300 kilometers of mountain bike trails. On the website Rad & Bike in Vorarlberg you will find an extensive range of excursions and tours for bikes, road bikes, e-bikes, mountain bikes and gravel bikes.
Cycling through blooming plains
The spring scenery is enchanting. The snow glistens on the mountains, fresh greenery and flowers sprout on Lake Constance and in the valleys. Now is a particularly beautiful time to explore the almost 30-kilometer-long Vorarlberg shore of Lake Constance by bike. If you want to cycle further, you can cycle around the entire lake on the 260-kilometer Lake Constance cycling route. Alternatively, individual stages can be covered by boat. Lake Constance shipping is in operation from 3 April to 18 October 2026.
The Rheintal cycling route from Bregenz to Feldkirch along the Rhine is a good 46 scenic kilometers long. Another top tip is the almost 20-kilometre circular tour through the Feldkirch nature conservation areas. There, in the Bangs-Matschels European Protected Area, irises transform the meadows into a sea of blue flowers from around mid-May.
For a few years now, a section of a European long-distance cycle route has also been running through Vorarlberg. The 61-kilometer section of the EuroVelo 15 – the Rhine cycle route – runs from Feldkirch to Höchst. In total, the cycling route is 1,450 kilometers long. It follows the Rhine river from its source in Switzerland to the Netherlands.
Discover new things on themed trails
The 100-kilometer audio cycling route “Across the border“, designed by the Jewish Museum Hohenems, tells touching stories. From Lake Constance to Montafon, 65 audio stations provide insights into the fates of people who tried to reach safety in Switzerland from Vorarlberg between 1938 and 1945.
Nature and culture are also combined on the cultural cycle route. Sights, museums, culinary hotspots and much more can be found along the 252-kilometre Vorarlberg-wide route, which can also be ridden in family- and pleasure-friendly stages.
On the road at panoramic altitudes
Mountain bikers start the season at medium altitudes. It usually takes until May or June for the snow to melt at altitudes above 1,500 meters. Suitable tours can be found in all holiday regions. In the Bregenzerwald, for example, a 33-kilometre tour leads from Lingenau around the Subersach. In the Vorarlberg Alpine region, the 5-valley mountain bike tour from June is a good choice. The 155-kilometer route can be easily mastered in four stages. There are charging stations for e-mountain bikes along the way. Beautiful views open up along the 28-kilometre-long Bergknappentour on the Kristberg in Montafon. The medium-difficulty circular tour is easily rideable from May. In the Arlberg region, the mountain biking season usually begins in June. The 25-kilometer, scenically impressive Spullersee tour is a great way to kick off the season. Sports shops in Lech offer rental e-mountain bikes. In Kleinwalsertal, the picturesque Schwarzwassertal can be explored from May onwards. The medium-difficulty route is just under 17 kilometers long and starts in Hirschegg.
Enjoyable on two wheels
For exploratory yet enjoyable rides with (e-)mountain bikes, the Bregenzerwald offers two day tours under the motto “Culinary Cycling” . The tour from Mellau is rideable from the beginning of May, the one from Lingenau from the beginning of June. Both routes take cyclists from breakfast to lunch and on to dessert.
Graveling, exploring and celebrating
Gravel bikers will find a good selection of routes in all of Vorarlberg’s holiday regions. One of the latest attractions is the 282-kilometre gravel tour through the whole of Vorarlberg – from the three-thousand-metre peaks in the Montafon to Lake Constance.
A popular meeting point for the scene for several years now is the gravel bike event “into the wold” in the Bregenzerwald. It takes place from 2 to 5 July 2026 and invites participants to explore the region in all its facets. The program includes themed trips, yoga sessions, night swimming and the closing party. Top regional restaurateurs will provide the catering. The “into the wold” ultra is new this year for the very sporty: the 300-kilometre route with 8,000 elevation gains must be completed in a maximum of 36 hours. Participants must provide their own food and drink. A sleep break is allowed along the way.
Curving downhill in the “flow”
With new routes and better access through the modernized Loischkopfbahn – now a gondola – the Bikepark Brandnertal starts into the season in mid-May 2026. The network of trails of varying difficulty in Vorarlberg’s largest bike park is a good 30 kilometers long.
The trail park in the Montafon comprises three trails of varying difficulty with a total length of seven kilometers. It is located on the Hochjoch, Schruns’ local mountain. To get to the starting point, take the Hochjoch cable car, which will be in summer operation from mid-May 2026.
A new pump, jump & ride area opened at the valley station of the Valisera and Grasjochbahn cable cars in St. Gallenkirch in Montafon in summer 2025.
There are smaller practice areas and freely accessible pump tracks in several places, for example in Mellau in the Bregenzerwald region, in Mittelberg in the Kleinwalsertal valley and in Lustenau and Hörbranz in the Bodensee-Vorarlberg region.
Courses and guided tours
Mountain bikers who want to refine their technique in courses or go out together can choose from a wide range of options.
In the Bregenzerwald the professionals from the Bregenzerwald Bike School accompany several mountain bike tours a day with a maximum of six people. The program includes workshops for mountain bikers and e-bikers as well as riding technique courses. The bike school is also a Liteville test and ride center and offers rental bikes from this brand for excursions.
Guided tours are also part of the weekly program in the Montafon, Brandnertal and Kleinwalsertal from around mid-May.
Important to know
To promote respectful interaction on and off the cycling routes, Vorarlberg Tourism developed together with the holiday regions rules of conduct for mountain bikers. The “Vorarlberg Biking Code of Conduct” focuses on consideration, personal responsibility and a conscious approach to the environment. These principles apply on all routes – especially in sensitive habitats, around grazing livestock and in relation to other people.
