Experience and encounter
Opening: Literaturhaus Vorarlberg
An extraordinary concept in a historic villa: Literaturhaus Vorarlberg (House of Literature) Hohenems will open on Saturday, 5 April 2025
On Saturday, 5 April 2025, the Literaturhaus Vorarlberg will officially open its doors for the first time at the Villa Franziska und Iwan Rosenthal in Hohenems. This unique, historic estate complex, built in 1890 and located in the heart of the city, offers 360 square metres of space across the ground and first floors for a revolutionary new concept:
A place of encounter, inspiration and exchange for all
“In the heart of the city, the Literaturhaus Vorarlberg invites you to discover the contemporary literary landscape, its questions, and its needs. It will be a lively, inclusive and enriching place of encounter, inspiration and exchange for all citizens,” says Literaturhaus director Frauke Kühn. “Our Literaturhaus is meant to be a laboratory – encouraging visitors and authors to experiment. It should be a place that attracts new audiences to storytelling, reading and writing, focusing less on the finished book and more on the processual nature of language. Traditional readings will be rethought in our programme and will be the exception rather than the rule.”
Deeply rooted in the region
The Literaturhaus Vorarlberg is committed to strong community engagement and plans a wide range of event formats, experimental project designs and interactive interventions. As a “maker space,” it fosters collaboration and exchange while also making itself accessible through initiatives in public spaces. Planned activities include, for example, a comprehensive children’s and youth programme, workshops for those interested in writing as well as writing consultation. Again and again, the Literaturhaus will also be the venue for larger projects, such as Stadtflüstern (city whispers), where students, senior citizens, immigrants and migrants can all collaborate with authors to write and tell stories in their favourite places. The Literaturhaus will be open during the day for visitors of all ages: students can explore their creativity, adults can make use of the audio offerings, or visitors can explore the spaces at their own pace.
