The tour starts at the top station of the Steffisalp-Express. Once you arrive at the top station, head straight up along a hiking trail. When you reach the Wartherhornsattel, you’ll need your via ferrata gear.

This is where the via ferrata begins. The east ridge of the via ferrata runs continuously from the start to the summit at difficulty level A/B. This section is therefore ideal for all via ferrata beginners and those with some basic via ferrata experience, and it certainly meets their needs. The route continues along the west ridge.

Once at the summit, it becomes immediately clear: this is where beginners will reach their limits. With a difficulty rating of B/C, several hundred meters of this route challenge even experienced via ferrata climbers. The exposed and airy ridge climbing requires a head for heights and sure-footedness. A long rock slab secured by a rope marks the exit from the west ridge.

From here, a trail leads first downhill across the southern slope of the Karhorn and then along the base of the Karhorn—which you just climbed—back to the Wartherhorn Saddle.

The return route follows the same path used for the ascent.

Summit tip: If you still have enough energy left, you can hike from the Wartherhorn Saddle up to the Wartherhorn.

Tip: Early risers can skip the Steffisalp Express and walk the rest of the way to the mountain station.

Note: The via ferrata may only be traversed with via ferrata equipment!
