  • Directions

From Mittelberg you take the Walmendingerhornbahn cable car to the mighty and imposing Widderstein peak, which is almost 2000 metres high. They call it “the mountain of the senses”. The sweeping views to this “guard of the valley” and the adjacent Bärgunt and Gemstel valleys are breathtaking. Take in the panorama and the views to the Ifen in the Schwarzwasser valley from two lookout platforms.
From the mountain terminal, the alpine flower trail will take you to the peak of Walmendingerhorn in just 15 minutes, where heart-stopping panoramic views unfold. The trail starts on a wide path lined with native alpine flora, first downhill and then along the hillside to Obere Löchle alp. This is where Bütti and Bella make their genuine Walser mountain cheese during alp time in summer. A little further on, the trail turns at a corner and takes hikers to a realm of unexpected beauty: in June and July, giant snow rose fields line the way to Innerer Stierhof and Starzel alp.
Now climb up to Ochsenhofer Scharte, the gateway to the Schwarzwasser valley. Geologically, the ridge is the dividing line between Europe and Africa: in the south east the African Widderstein (east alpine, main dolomite), in the north east the European Ifen (helveticum, schrattenkalk formation) and in between the grass-covered mats of Walmendinger Horn in the flysch zone). Ascending first steeply, then moderately, the trail leads to Schwarzwasserhuette hut, passing high-lying moors with a sizable population of orchids, then down to the high plateau of Galt and Melköde, which was formed by a post-glacial rockslide. At the waterfall, you will come across Alpe Melköde with its own dairy farm.
Now take the almost level trail which passes glacial mills and an estavelle (a ground orifice which, depending on weather conditions and season, can serve either as a sink or as a source of fresh water, during dry periods it serves as a natural underground conduit on approx. 1 km for the Schwarzwasser brook) and across the high-lying Wildmoos moor to Auenhütte.
