Parish church of St. Martin, Partenen

From 1925, pastoral care in Partenen also included the immediate welfare of the numerous workers involved in the construction of the power plant facilities in Partenen, on Trominier and in Vermunt. The pastor Konrad Thurnher (1885-1951) worked to establish a workers’ home, a cinema, a bowling alley and a (non-alcoholic) restaurant. Konrad Thurnher worked in Partenen until 1931, the year in which the Vermuntwerk was completed. St. Martin’s Church had already involuntarily ensured social, even cross-border cohesion: after the village fire of 1800, which had also destroyed the little baroque church from 1729, citizens from the neighboring Tyrolean valley of Paznaun, from Ischgl and Galtür, also contributed to the reconstruction of the church with donations. Later, Bishop Franz Joseph Rudigier (1811-1884) of Linz also made donations to ensure the continued well-being of the little church in his home village. Incidentally, the house where the Bishop of Linz was born has been preserved in Partenen to this day. Inside the church, the popular, late Baroque furnishings and the sculpture of St. Martin are striking. The presence of this patron saint of all travelers should also be welcome in Partenen, the village at the foot of the Zeinisjoch and the Silvretta-Bielerhöhe. Further assistance is also provided in the church by the 14 holy helpers painted on the ceiling by Vorarlberg church painter Anton Marte (1874-1929).

  • Directions

Our route leads us out of the valley from the Partenen tourist office. After a few meters we reach the house where Bishop Rudigier was born on the left. Opposite is the energie.raum. We continue out of the valley past the Tafamuntbahn cable car and then cross the main road to the left to reach the Tafamuntbahn cable car. From here, the path leads us into the valley, the first section still on the road, then on a path through the Gufelgut to the “Gufelste”. Following this path, we reach the toll station of the Silvretta High Alpine Road a few meters after the Gufelstee. Here we cross the main road again, then we walk the first section across the meadow and continue through the forest on a goods path towards the center. Our route takes us past the mountain station of the Lifinar T-bar lift, where we soon rejoin the road to Partenen. St. Martin’s Church is the last point on our route and only a few meters away from the Partenen tourist office.
