Directions
No other village ensemble in Vorarlberg is as harmonious and p erfectly intact as that of Schwarzenberg. Here is where paintress Angelika Kauffmann (1741 to 1814, museum) lived and where the Austrian poet Eduard Mörike, to whom a themed trail is dedicated on our route, s pent his holidays. The awe-inspiring church and the proud inns and homes that were reconstructed after a fire 250 years ago, with their characteristic grayish-brown shingle-clad facades, are one of the loveliest starting and end points for hikes. In between you will find trails tracing the footsteps of Eduard Mörike. Describing the views from Hochälpele, he exulted: “What amazing splendour ! As if standing on a tower, we could see far into the country all around us, behind us, from where we came, the entire Bregenzerwald with its string of villages and alpine shelters, between strips of woodland and pastures, to the left the Swiss mountains, to the right Bavaria and Austria, in front of us Wurttemberg and beneath us the lovely Bregenz, Lindau, right to Friedrichshafen………..”. 150 years later, on a fine day, we can s pot the colourful dots of paragliders sailing the thermal winds of the Niedere on the other side.
