Versatile climbing around the Valkastiel castle ruins
Above the community of Vandans at about 1,000 meters above sea level in a highly exposed location lies the Valkastiel castle ruins. It is uncertain from which era this old building originates, but it is certain that today there is a via ferrata park up there that promises you a versatile climbing experience with five routes of varying difficulty levels.
The Schloßwand gorge crossing (B/C) is the easiest via ferrata … but like the Felsenfenster via ferrata (C), these often run through gullies that are often wet and thus can be very slippery!
The Hohe Wand via ferrata (C) is already a bit more exciting for climbing enthusiasts! Airy sections and two rope bridges make the climbing heart beat faster. Descent via the gorge path.
Challenging and therefore for athletic climbers are the Pfeiler Wand via ferrata (D) and the Brückenwand via ferrata (D). With several key spots on overhangs, steep edges, and slabs, it is only for the experienced. Descent also via the gorge path.
Climbing all the via ferratas including approach and descent is already more than a half-day undertaking… but the interesting climbing spots and the impressive views down are ample reward!
