Corona infection: what now?

Useful information for tourists
Status: 24.3.2022

You have just found out via SMS that your coronavirus test is positive. You will probably be asking yourself a lot of questions: What is the first thing I’ve got to do now? What do I have to be ready for? How long and where do I have to stay in quarantine? What happens to people who accompany me on the journey?
We have compiled a condensed list of all the things which need to be done in the right sequence as well as who can provide you with organisational support.

1. Avoid contact with other people

Go into quarantine as quickly as possible! If you are currently out and about, wear an FFP2 mask and go directly to your room. The health authority has received an automatic notification about your positive test result. They will contact you via a contact form. However, due to the current situation with infections, there may be a delay in the authority contacting you. Irrespective of this, you must quarantine following a positive coronavirus test. Coronavirus infection is a notifiable disease. You must comply with information given by the health authority.

2. Inform your accommodation provider

Ask your accommodation provider whether you can spend your quarantine (at least 5 days) in your holiday accommodation. If quarantine in the booked accommodation is not possible or not wanted, the regional tourist organisations will help you to find quarantine accommodation (see point 5). The Republic of Austria will pay accommodation costs for the duration of the quarantine for people infected with Covid at an amount of 75 Euros per night. You will find the application form at the bottom of this page.

3. The health authority will contact you

People with a positive test result will receive a contact form from the health authority via SMS. Complete the form carefully  within 24 hours. You will then receive the quarantine order with detailed information about what to do during quarantine. If necessary, use the DeepL translation service for translation into your own language.

4. What do I have to do during the quarantine?

You must monitor your state of health during the prescribed quarantine. If your health condition deteriorates, please contact the health hotline 1450. Eat what you feel an appetite for during the quarantine. Light food is recommended if you have symptoms. Drink plenty of fluids! The body’s need for fluids is higher when you have a fever. The higher the fever, the more you need to drink.

5. How and where can I find quarantine accommodation?

If you cannot stay or don’t want to stay in your vacation accommodation, staff at the regional tourist organisations can help you find quarantine accommodation on the following telephone numbers.

Alpenregion Bludenz (Brandnertal, Grosses Walsertal, Klostertal): T +43 5552 30227
Arlberg (Lech, Zürs, Stuben): T +43 5583 2161
Bregenzerwald: T +43 5512 2365
Bodensee-Vorarlberg (Towns and municipalities in the Rheintal valley): T +43 5574 43443 0
Kleinwalsertal: T +43 5517 5114 0
Montafon: T +43 50 6686
All of Vorarlberg outside normal office hours: T +43 5572 377033 0
6. When can I end the quarantine?

Quarantine lasts at least five days. You need to be free of symptoms for at least 48 hours in order to end quarantine. The start, duration and end of quarantine are determined by the health authority in the quarantine order. Please note: The end of the quarantine requires the absence of symptoms for at least 48 hours. Afterwards, however, traffic restrictions apply for another five days (e.g. wearing an FFP2 mask also in private settings, no visits to restaurants). In order to obtain an early lifting of the traffic restriction, a free test can be carried out (negative PCR test or Ct value ≥ 30). If CT<30, the traffic restriction must be continued until the end of the 5 days (or if a CT≥ 30 is reached before that).

7. What else do I need to do?
  • If you are traveling with a group, please inform your travel guide.
  • If you have taken out travel insurance with COVID cover, contact your insurance company.
  • If you booked your holiday in Vorarlberg as a package tour, contact your travel agent/tour operator.
  • Reorganise your return trip: Cancel and rebook your train or air ticket.
