The life of nomads yesteryear and today: in the spring, farmers and dairymen used to take their families and cattle, kith and kin, up to the intermediate alps, called ‘vorsaess’ or ‘maisaess’.
After the snowmelt in the mountains, they moved to the high-lying alps following the vegetation, not to return until mid-September. Locals and visitors alike trace their footsteps on safe hiking trails to alpine homesteads and shelters, on verdant pastures, through barren high-alpine shrublands up to the finest summit views. The trail to Widderstein is dotted with alps, from where even Lake Constance can be spotted on a clear day.
