Wiesenbachsaal hall, primary school and parsonage, Schlins

Vicarage Schlins
Wiesenbachsaal, Schlins
  • Viennese architect Michael Loudon ran a joint office with Markus Koch in Feldkirch until 1990, during which time he completed an array of exquisite projects. One of these was the Wiesenbachsaal, an event hall that also doubles as a gymnastics hall for the neighbouring primary school.

This ensemble represented just one of a series of informal public spaces, but its isolated location meant that it was not entrusted with additional functions. The two distinct building structures are a reminder of the Wiesenbachsaal’s dual-purpose nature, with an “everyday” gable roof encompassing the timber structure that features a plastered base for the foyer, cloakrooms, training rooms and library. Its exterior wall noticeably recedes in front of the foyer so as to create a covered entrance area. The all-round corridor, which provides space for the gymnastics equipment and chairs, also offers access to the open climbing walls. A barrel roof with visible trusses arcs high above. Finally, the elegantly designed bar in the cellar is a charming feature that harks back to the sophisticated Viennese bar and restaurant culture of the 1990s.
