The inn at the sulfur spring: House Paul

Haus Paul in Baad
Kulturweg: Haus Paul

Factbox

  • From a chronicle we learn that there was already a sulphur spring in Baad around the year 1434. In this busy spring bath, enclosed in its own cabin, “various afflictions could be effectively treated”. Later on the “Gasthaus zur Sonne” – which is today the Paul House, Starzelweg 7 – grew out of this simple “health resort”. The local Walser people found relief here for ailments such as rheumatism, the gout and respiratory problems.

The catchment of this spring was scarcely 200 meters distant, and from there the water was transported in “Dücheln” – wooden water pipes. The present owner, Mrs. Berta Paul (mother of 12 children), reported in 1998 that these wooden pipelines were clearly visible in the soil below. The spring ran dry in the 19th century, presumably due to a landslide, due to attempts to tap the source again under a “false” sign of the zodiac. Thus bathing in the spa facilities was no longer possible.
