Sühnekreuz Jörihalde

Sühnekreuz Jörihalde

Factbox

  • Despite technical and aesthetic defects, it attracts attention. According to legend, the cross was built by a man who had killed his three brothers in the fight on the way home. He is said to have been considerably drunk, probably his accompanying siblings. The first brother was killed here at Jorihalde, the next he killed at Kirchabühl in Mittelberg. He also murdered his third brother in the village, at the intersection with Bödmen. That cross was removed in 1935. However, the atonement at Kirchabühl at the foot of the Mittelberg church tower is remarkably well preserved. These stone monuments date back to the 13th and 16th centuries and were part of a negotiated atonement agreement between the murderer and the relatives of the victim. If such a contract included everything, shows an excerpt from an atonement letter, which you can read under the object number 1.
