Red House

Rotes Haus
  • The Rotes Haus (Red House) was built in 1639. It is the most impressive example of wooden construction techniques commonly used here in former centuries. The red coloring stems from a protective coating of ox-blood and ox-bile typically used in the 18th century. Noteworthy are also the four-part window groups with retractable shutters. The adjacent Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) house (4) was built in 1907-8, replacing the former farm outbuilding belonging to the Red House. Almost all houses on the Market Square originally had barns and stables and were engaged in the customary agricultural activities of the times.
