  • The Montafon Museum of Regional Heritage in Schruns has been open since 1906, making it one of the oldest of its kind in the entire Alpine region. Since 1978 it has had its home in the 500-year-old Stone House on the church square of the Montafon region’s chief town. The museum houses cultural heritage

collections from the entire valley and offers a wealth of information on the traditional way of life of Montafon inhabitants. The Montafon Archives and a specialist library, accessible for research purposes, are also located here.

The museum has an originally preserved and furnished local-home display, with kitchen, living room, bedrooms and crafts room, offering visitors insights into traditional domestic living styles in the valley. In the vaulted cellar there are displays of traditional workshops, as well as an historic hammer mill. On the second floor an old school classroom has been re-created. The exhibits also include an Alpine dairy and an extensive collection of folk costumes. A so-called “cell” alludes to the use of the building as the district jail at one time; here there is an exhibit dealing with the national socialist period in the Montafon. The museum also features several special temporary exhibits every year.
