Mehrerau Abbey, Bregenz – Abbey Church

Kloster Mehrerau, Klosterkirche
  • The foundation of the Cistercian Abbey Wettingen – Mehrerau back in 1095 marks the beginning of a turbulent history, which is reflected also in major architectural designs. The fundamental redesign of the abbey church by architect Hans Purin in the years 1961-64 was a landmark event in recent building culture in Vorarlberg. After laying open the timber vaults and removing superimposed architectural elements, the church was reduced to its original structure and the now visible impressive roof truss was integrated in the new spatial concept. The reference to an early Christian basilica and the spirit of Cistercian buildings is apparent. The portal sculpture by Herbert Albrecht is a daring addition to the western facade. Hans Arp was engaged for the design of the tabernacle (quote Achleitner, see bibliographic reference).
