Formarinsee

At the end of the Zugertal, in the middle of the Lechquellengebirge, the Lake Formarin is located at 1,793 m. The high mountain lake is of natural origin, it is formed every year anew from the meltwater of the surrounding mountains. Its size therefore varies greatly: As a rule, the lake is 500 m long, up to 400 m wide and maximum 17 m deep. Its name “Formarin” comes from a pre-German name for a centuries-old cultural landscape used as an alpine region. Lake Formarin has no superficial runoff, but drains underground via a karst cave system. Part of the water flows to the Lech and thus into the Danube. The other part of the water reaches the spring streams of the Marulbach in the Great Walser Valley after six to seven days and thus overcomes the European watershed underground and flows into the Rhine.

Geographically, the lake is located in the municipality of Dalaas and can be reached by foot from Klostertal, Grosses Walsertal and from Lech-Zürs. Those who prefer it more comfortable can take the hiking bus from Lech through the Zugertal directly to Lake Formarin. The area around Lake Formarin is very popular with hikers and mountaineers and offers numerous tours with wonderful panoramic views. An absolute must when visiting Lake Formarin: a stop at the Freiburger Hütte. There you are spoiled with regional hut delicacies and enjoy the fabulous view of Lake Formarin and the Red Wall.
