  • As of 2016, 115 people were killed by avalanches due to archive records. 198 houses, huts and stables were destroyed by avalanches, storms and extreme weather conditions. While formerly attempts were made to protect against avalanches by so-called spellways or deforestation forests, avalanche events have led to the first building measures being begun on the Heuberg in 1907 on the Heuberg. These earth and stone terraces belong to the first and thus oldest avalanche barriers in Austria. In 1959, the first earthhump were built in Laubenzug in Mittelberg. In 1963, the oldest of the 16 Erdhöcker were built here on the Gehrenhang. They protect the village center of Riezlern from the mite avalanche. At a total of 24 avalanche troughs in the valley (especially Heuberg and Gehren) obstruction measures were carried out and these are further completed by the torrent and avalanche control and also cared for.
