Avalanche protection of the Lourdeskapelle

Lourdeskapelle
Kulturweg: Lourdeskapelle

Factbox

  • On 29 December 1693 a large avalanche careened down the Heuberg and forced its way into the Mittelberg parish church St. Jodok, where a pine tree carried along with it pushed its way to the Sebastian’s altar under the quire arch. In addition, the parish house and six stables were destroyed by the Heuberg avalanche. After the Lourdes Chapel was built in 1897 the main portal of the church, which had been walled up since 1693, was opened up again, since the pointed outer wall of the Chapel provided effective avalanche protection.
