Alte Mühle

Factbox

  • The existence of a mill is evident from the Mittelberger Jahrzeitbuch in 1446, in which “der muluken under dem mulweg” is reported. The Mühleweg mentioned here still leads from Bödmerstraße along the Mühlebach to the village center of Mittelberg. And in 1485, a certain Hans Mutter called “a good that borders the Mühlebach inland” in his foundation. It can be seen from this information that the mill has been in operation for many years. With regard to the purchase of grain, in 1694 the municipality (“Mittelberg court”) submitted an application to the Oberamt in Bregenz to import grain and exchange it for the export of lard. It became difficult e.g. In 1837, when the duty-free grain imported from Bavaria was lifted, around 1890 there were three grinding mills in the Kleinwalsertal, which were closed after the First World War. This mill with its three mill gears and a barley pound was shut down in 1920. The last miller was the “Mühle-Marikatri” popularly known. The old mill in its original construction with a brick basement and the room and chamber above was still very well preserved and was built in 1605. Old, massive foundations suggested a previous building. The water was drawn from the flowing Mühlebach via an open channel made of boards. The wooden millwheel was removed in the early 1950s due to the rear building being remodeled. Two millstones of this mill have been preserved as stone witnesses to an old craft tradition. On May 16, 2009, the “Old Mill” was destroyed by fire.
