Enjoy colourful festivals in summer and autumn. Nature plays a big part as always, from Lake Constance to the mountain panorama. With programmes for young and old, ranging from high culture to cabaret, and events held in villages and cities, many of them open air!
“Lichtstadt Feldkirch” (Light City Feldkirch) is the festival for art with light in Vorarlberg. Every two years, the festival invites artists to perform in Feldkirch in many forms and facets. The historic old town is not only a spectacular backdrop for the festival evenings themselves. Above all, the locations are the starting point and source of inspiration for the content and design framework of the light art festival.
The Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik (Days for contemporary music in Bludenz) is an international festival whose goal is to make contemporary music audible in Bludenz. The festival takes place in the Remise Bludenz. The 2020 program primarily included music of the 21st century, with only two pieces older. The program tied in with milestones in the collaboration with individual composers or ensembles. A master class was also offered.
These choir and organ music days have been held for over 20 years and offer visitors high-level ecclesiastic music from various styles. The exquisite sound of the Gollini organ and the good acoustics in the church hall of the St. Karl parish church make these performances a true experience.
The :alpenarte is the young music festival in Schwarzenberg in the Bregenzerwald. The festival offers music beyond the traditional classical repertoire and thus appeals to new audiences – from tango to other musical genres such as evergreens. Outstanding talents with a connection to Vorarlberg as well as international musicians* show their skills.
The Montforter Zwischentöne take place as a series of events in the Montforthaus Feldkirch on three weekends a year and are each dedicated to a main theme. The themes are linked to seasonally associated moods, customs and festivals. This results in programs that relate to each other as well as new formats that combine the experiences of artists and experts with the experiences of the audience.
The Schubertiade is the most important Schubert Festival in the world. It takes place annually in several cycles in Hohenems – the festival’s place of origin – and in Schwarzenberg in the Bregenzerwald. Nature and culture form a remarkable symbiosis.
In the summer of 2021, the Bregenz Festival presented the revival of the senational production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto on the lake stage. In 2022, Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly will be seen on a total of 25 evenings. As an opera in the Festspielhaus, the Bregenz Festival will present Siberia (1903) by Umberto Giordano.
If the opera in the Festspielhaus takes the audience to Russia, the musical journey continues in the orchestral concerts – in addition to music by Richard Wagner and Ludwig van Beethoven, the program also includes some works by Russian composers such as Peter I. Tchaikovsky and Dmitri Shostakovich.
Top-class concerts of different genres in the Montafon: From wind instruments to baroque and chamber music, jazz, crossover or organ – 16 organs from four centuries can be found in the Montafon in a very small space! All of the festival’s performances take place in extraordinary venues that are tailored to the music.
Movie buffs are already looking forward to the 36th ALPINALE Short Film Festival, which will once again take place in Bludenz. The international jury will view all submitted competition films together with the audience and award winning films in various categories. Including children’s short film festival and acting workshop. The ALPINALE presents the international short films in original version with German or English subtitles on the Remiseplatz.
Potentials for a good time promises the event series, which will take place for the sixth time in 2021. The forum with festival character illuminates questions on current topics from different perspectives. The program includes lectures and discussions as well as concerts at unusual locations, hikes, readings and culinary experiences. FAQ Bregenzerwald is also accessible around the year as an online platform for questions and answers, food for thought and inspiration.
The project idea of the Youth Symphony Orchestra Quarta 4 is to establish a cross-border philharmonic workshop as a new stage for talents from the Lake Constance area and has been active for several years already very successfully under the founder and conductor Christoph Eberle. The concerts take place at several locations in Vorarlberg.
Every summer, the poolbar Festival is on the agenda: the festival for cultural events from niche to pop in Feldkirch attracts numerous guests every year with its uniquely designed ambience and big names such as Element of Crime. New every year: the architecture. The appeal of the festival also lies in the intelligent temporary design of the spaces, which contributes significantly to the poolbar image and makes architecture one of the festival headliners.
Established as recently as 2014, the Jazz Stage Lech has blossomed into a bright star among the array of Arlberg summer events. In the second week of August, the former post office garage in the centre of Lech becomes a magnet for top-class jazz musicians from around the globe.
With its performances of dance art at the highest level, the Bregenzer Frühling (Bregenz Spring) enjoys great popularity far beyond the borders of the country. Its special profile and quality is unique in the Lake Constance region. Every spring, top-class, internationally acclaimed ensembles thrill audiences with their new standard-setting productions at the Festspielhaus Bregenz. Extremely remarkable and expressive choreographies determine the program.
Unfortunately, some dates for 2021 have already had to be cancelled. One piece of good news: we have succeeded in bringing Helena Waldmann to Bregenz with a new production in the summer. She will perform in the public space. Further information will be available soon.
