We want Moor!

The moor in Krumbach is a unique destination. And the delicacies of the moor restaurateurs are just as appealing as the extraordinary landscape.

Date: 11 October 2017

When hiking on the moor, there’s no such thing as bad weather. In fact, fog or light drizzle can make it an even more mystical place. Plus the fauna and flora, that can only be found in this unique natural landscape, rely on moisture to thrive. That’s why the moor in Krumbach is also well worth a visit in autumn.

Hiking through the moor

Whereas the moors in some other places have already been completely eradicated as a result of peat extraction, the local council of Krumbach in the Bregenzerwald maintains its moor as part of the sustainable development efforts of the community. This also benefits the visitors, of course, allowing them to experience the moor up close and personal. A hike in the moors is always a great experience, whether alone, in a group, or as part of a personalised guided tour. There’s lots to discover. One of the most important things to bring along is sturdy footwear. The moor is especially beautiful in the early morning, while most of the animals and people are still sleeping. Anyone who wants to get a feel for the Krumbach moor – before visiting – can read through Sofie’s blog post on her blog wonderfulwanderings.com.

Benches and rooms

A total of 14 moor benches are spread out along the trails, offering the perfect place to stop off for a while and take in the beautiful nature. They also provide interesting information about various topics such as moorland drainage, turf-moss and the geology in the region. Hikers can also take a break in the “Moorraum”, where a breathtaking view of the Salgenreute moor awaits them. This wooden viewing pavilion impresses in an architectural sense with its clear lines and delicate positioning in the countryside. A further highlight is the Salgenreute chapel, built from scratch by the Vorarlberg architect Bernardo Bader.

Four moor restaurateurs

Guests can also experience the moor from a culinary perspective. The four moor restaurateurs work as moor guides themselves and have even incorporated the moor in their menus, enriching their dishes and drinks with plants, berries and herbs. Each restaurateur has at least one ‘moorish’ dish on their menu all year round. The participating restaurants are Restaurant s’Schulhus, Krumbacher Stuba, Auszeithotel Rossbad and Gasthof Adler in Krumbach.

Moor events

There are also many moor-related events the whole year round in Krumbach. And best of all: the events take place regularly. For example, four moor breakfasts are held during the summer. The moor restaurateurs invite their guests to take a walk at dawn and enjoy a hearty breakfast upon their return. The moor breakfast can even be booked separately for hiking excursions with a certain number of participants. Under the heading “culture & cuisine”, the moor restaurateurs also organise concert evenings with two-course meals. Places are snapped up quickly and should be booked as early as possible. This is just a small selection of events – the Krumbacher locals and restaurateurs are sure to have even more ideas for the coming year.
